How to Turn Off Ads on Xiaomi Phones: A Complete Guide for MIUI and HyperOS

You paid for a Xiaomi phone, and it’s still showing you ads. Not just on a budget model, either: even pricey flagships push promotions into the file manager, the music player, and the browser. A higher price tag doesn’t buy you an ad-free experience. The good news is that most of it can be switched off in a few minutes, and this guide shows you exactly where to look.
As for why Xiaomi does it, the answer is simple: the company collects user data to sell more products and services, and ads are part of that machine.

Start With the System-Level Ads

Most of the promotions you see come from a single system component called MSA, short for MIUI System Ads. Turning it off gives you the biggest improvement for the least effort, so begin here.
Open Settings, go to Passwords & Security, then Authorization & Revocation, and switch off MSA. On some HyperOS devices the same section lives somewhere else, under Settings, then Fingerprints, Face Data & Screen Lock. If you can’t find it on the first path, check the second.

Stop Personalized Recommendations

Even with MSA disabled, the system keeps tailoring promotions to your interests. To cut that off, go back to the security section, open Privacy, and tap Ad Services.

Switch off personalized ad recommendations there. Depending on your software version, the option may be labeled Ad Personalization, but it does the same thing. After these two steps you’ll notice far fewer ads, though some will remain inside individual apps, and those need to be handled one by one.

Ads Inside Xiaomi’s Own Apps

Every built-in Xiaomi app has its own ad settings, separate from the system-wide ones.

In Downloads, open the app’s settings and turn off recommended content. In Themes, disable personalized recommendations and ads. In Music, go to Settings, then Advanced Settings, and switch off ads. In Mi Browser, head to Settings, then Privacy & Security, and disable personalized services.

The Security and File Manager Apps

These two work a little differently, so they get their own section.

In the Security app, tap the gear icon in the top right corner and turn off recommendations. Then open the Cleaner section and disable the same option there. In File Manager on older MIUI versions, tap the three-line menu in the top left, go to Settings, then About, and switch off recommendations. On newer HyperOS phones the choices are more limited. Open File Manager, tap the three dots in the top right, enter the settings, and choose Withdrawal of Consent.

Reset Your Google Ad ID and Mute Promo Notifications

Two more steps close the remaining loopholes. The first is your advertising ID, the identifier ad networks use to recognize you. Open Settings, then Google, then All Services, find the ad ID options, and choose Reset or Delete Advertising ID. It won’t remove every ad, but it limits how well they can be targeted.

The second is promotional notifications. Go to Settings, then Apps, then Manage Apps, pick the app that’s pestering you, and turn off its notifications. Keep in mind that this can silence useful alerts from the same app, so do it selectively.

A Few Things to Keep in Mind

Menu names and locations vary by phone model and software version, so if you can’t spot an option, use the search bar at the top of Settings. After a major system update, it’s worth running through this route again, because some switches can quietly return to their default positions.
