If you own a MacBook Pro, you know it’s a bit heavier than the MacBook Air. Sure, it’s still far lighter than most Windows laptops, but those few hundred grams add up when you’re carrying it around to work somewhere other than your desk. That goes double if you work on the move, whether in cafés, on trains or in coworking spaces.
Now for news Apple hasn’t confirmed yet: the MacBook Pro is reportedly getting a complete overhaul. According to insiders, the changes go well beyond the screen. Although yes, some of you were definitely waiting for OLED.
Significantly lighter
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple has miniaturized parts and rearranged components inside the redesigned MacBook Pro to make it considerably easier to carry.
Gurman doesn’t give an exact weight, only describing the reduction as significant. The difference should be most noticeable on the 16-inch model, which is substantially heavier than anything in the MacBook Air lineup.
What else is changing
Weight is only part of the story. The redesign is expected to be the biggest for the lineup in years:
- an OLED display replacing the current mini-LED panel;
- touchscreen support, a first for any MacBook;
- a thinner enclosure;
- a Dynamic Island-style cutout in place of the notch.
A thinner chassis combined with lower weight suggests Apple has made portability a core goal of the redesign, rather than simply swapping the display and refreshing the looks.
Software is getting ready too
New hardware needs new software. Per Bloomberg, Apple is preparing changes in macOS Golden Gate to support the touchscreen and the Dynamic Island-style interface. The redesigned MacBook Pro is reportedly being tested with macOS 27.2.
Chips
The new models are expected to use M5 Pro and M5 Max chips. Separately, Apple is said to be preparing an entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro with the newer M6 chip.
When to expect it
Apple hasn’t announced the redesigned MacBook Pro or confirmed a launch date. Bloomberg’s latest report points to an introduction by November, which could put the new machines only weeks away.
Until then, all of this remains unconfirmed. Final specs, exact weight and pricing will become clear only after Apple’s official announcement.
