Apple Prepares a Touchscreen MacBook Pro and OLED iPad mini for Late October

Apple’s September iPhone launches may have grabbed the headlines, but the company’s autumn schedule looks far from finished. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman says two of the most anticipated products of the year, a laptop you can touch and a revamped small tablet, are likely to arrive within weeks. None of this is confirmed, so treat everything below as reporting and rumor.

The Mac that finally responds to your finger

For years, Apple has insisted that Mac screens don’t need touch. That stance appears to be ending. Speaking on the debut episode of his new podcast, Gurman said the first touchscreen MacBook Pro should arrive this fall, possibly in October, with November as the fallback. The reported lineup is a 14-inch and a 16-inch model, both with touch-enabled OLED panels.

Several clues suggest the project is real and advanced:

  • Apple is reportedly testing the laptops on a beta of macOS 27.2, due toward the end of October.
  • Developer builds of macOS 27 contained full touch support for Sidecar, which today handles only Apple Pencil and a few gestures.
  • Code for touch input was also spotted in apps like Safari, Photos, Notes and Preview.

Design rumors point to a slimmer machine. The notch is said to give way to a Dynamic Island. The chip is unclear: one report says M5 Pro and M5 Max, while another expects an M6. The name is also up in the air. Some outlets say “MacBook Ultra,” but Apple hasn’t used that label.

A smaller tablet with a bigger upgrade

The iPad mini is reportedly getting its most significant refresh in years. Expected changes include an OLED display, an A20 Pro chip, 12GB of RAM, a front camera repositioned for landscape use, better speakers and water resistance. Of the iPads in the pipeline, the mini is expected to come first.

What the calendar looks like

The rumored sequence is busy:

  1. October 13: an Apple TV 4K, a screen-equipped HomePad and a HomePod mini.
  2. October 23: iPhone Duo shipments begin.
  3. Late October to early November: a second wave that could include the touchscreen MacBook Pro, a new iMac and an M5 Ultra Mac Studio.

This rhythm is familiar. In five of the last ten years, Apple followed its September event with a Mac-focused October announcement.

Why it matters

If the reports hold, Apple would be crossing a line it has avoided for over a decade. The hardware is the easy part. The real test is macOS: a desktop interface built around a cursor has to feel natural under a fingertip, and that’s where Apple’s long reluctance will either prove justified or fade.

A note on sourcing: Bloomberg’s original article blocks automated access, so this piece relies on reporting by other outlets that cover Gurman’s claims. Dates, specs and product names may change.
