A new report by analyst Mark Gurman points to a possible shift in Apple’s strategy for developing Siri. According to this information, the company is considering building a full-fledged AI chatbot for iOS 27 — an assistant whose logic and interface would resemble modern AI systems such as ChatGPT or Google’s products.
If these details are confirmed, it would represent a significant revision of Apple’s public stance, as the company previously emphasized that it was not aiming to create a standalone chatbot and that Siri’s development followed a different goal.
Two parallel paths for Siri’s development
According to Gurman, Apple is reportedly working on two major stages of Siri’s evolution at the same time. The first is an update to Apple Intelligence Siri, which the company promised nearly two years ago. Under this version, the update is still expected to arrive as part of iOS 26.4.
This update is expected to allow Siri, with user permission, to see what’s on the device’s screen, understand actions within apps, and better interpret system-level context. This approach is framed as an evolution of the assistant rather than a transition to a traditional chatbot.
The second direction mentioned by Gurman involves the development of a new Siri chatbot within iOS 27. Internally at Apple, this project is reportedly known as Project Campos. By description, it most closely resembles what users today commonly refer to as an AI chatbot.
The role of Google and Gemini models
Another key question is which models will power the new version of Siri. Apple has officially confirmed that it will use Google Gemini models as part of Apple Intelligence. However, it remains unclear how deeply these models are integrated into Apple’s internal architecture.
Gurman claims that both the Siri update in iOS 26.4 and the potential chatbot in iOS 27 could partially rely on newer, more powerful versions of Gemini. Moreover, the report mentions the possible use of Google’s cloud infrastructure to process certain requests.
This aspect raises the most questions, as such an approach could conflict with Apple’s privacy messaging and its Private Compute Cloud concept, which the company has promoted since iOS 18. At present, Apple has not publicly commented on the technical details of its collaboration with Google, leaving these claims unconfirmed.
A contradiction with Apple’s previous statements
Gurman’s report contrasts with what Apple has previously stated publicly. At WWDC 2025, Apple senior vice president Craig Federighi explicitly said that building a chatbot was not the primary goal of Siri’s development. According to him, the focus was and remains on an integrated assistant rather than a separate conversational interface.
For this reason, the latest reports are being interpreted as a possible strategic pivot, or at least an adjustment driven by market pressure and the rapid advancement of competing AI systems.
What can be considered confirmed
At this point, only a few elements can be considered confirmed. Apple has acknowledged its partnership with Google in the area of AI models. The company has also officially announced continued development of Apple Intelligence and Siri as part of iOS 26.
Everything else — including a full Siri chatbot, the use of Google cloud infrastructure for processing requests, and direct competition with ChatGPT — is based on insider reports and has not been publicly confirmed by Apple.
Information about a potential Siri chatbot in iOS 27 appears logical from a market perspective, but it also contradicts some of Apple’s earlier statements. For now, this should be viewed not as a fact, but as a possible direction Apple may be exploring alongside its already announced Siri updates.
Until Apple makes official announcements, these reports should be treated cautiously, clearly separating confirmed partnerships and stated updates from assumptions about Siri’s future architecture and Google’s role in that process.
