Rumors about camera-equipped AirPods have been circulating for a while, making it seem like they’d be Apple’s flagship earbud drop this year. However, according to well-known Apple insider Mark Gurman (via his Power On newsletter cited by TechRadar), the company’s actual timeline tells a different story.

Two Models, Different Timelines

Apple is actually working on two separate pairs of earbuds. The rumored flagship white model—which will indeed feature tiny built-in cameras, as confirmed by prior sources and now Gurman—has seen its release pushed back to 2027.

Meanwhile, the earbuds slated to drop alongside the new iPhone lineup in late 2026 are an entirely different story. Details remain scarce—it’s still unclear whether they will be standard AirPods, AirPods Pro, or an over-ear refresh (though a new over-ear model is unlikely given the recent AirPods Max 2 release). The bottom line: this 2026 pair will not include cameras.

Why Put Cameras in Earbuds Anyway?

The idea of embedding cameras into earbuds might sound odd, but Apple’s rationale is straightforward: it’s part of the company’s broader push into artificial intelligence. The camera isn’t meant for taking photos; it’s designed to let an AI assistant “see” your surroundings in real time and respond with relevant context.

Naturally, this raises the big question: do consumers actually want this?

Smart glasses with similar features have already faced pushback, as the concept of an always-on device recording its surroundings sparks more privacy concern than excitement for many. Combine that with a consumer sentiment around AI features that feels more lukewarm than enthusiastic lately, and it becomes much clearer why Apple isn’t rushing this to market.

What This Means for Buyers

If you’ve been waiting for “smart” AirPods packed with computer vision, you’ll need to hang tight until at least 2027.

On the flip side, the model landing later this year will likely focus on something far more practical—like upgraded audio quality. And honestly, for most users, better sound is a much welcome priority over a set of cameras constantly scanning their environment.
