Canon looks set to shake up its entry-level full-frame line-up, and the rumour mill has been working overtime. Here’s the lowdown on what’s expected from the EOS R8 Mark II.
Canon EOS R8 Mark II: design leaks, specs and release date
Word on the street—well, on CanonRumors, at any rate—is that the official unveiling is pencilled in for 15 September 2026. Canon’s expected to roll out a new Speedlite EL-5 II flash and an optional grip extension alongside it. If the leaks are right, you’re looking at a launch price around €1,879 (roughly $2,180), with stock landing in shops sometime in October.
A proper redesign
The design is what’s really got people talking. Early whispers suggested Canon might lean into a “retro” look, harking back to the much-loved AE-1 film camera from 1976. As it turns out, that influence is rather understated:
- A sharper, more angular body—less curved, more chiselled
- New leather-effect trim on the grip, with a simpler, cleaner shape
- A more prominent viewfinder hump
- The “EOS R8” branding appears to have been dropped from the body entirely
- Button layout largely untouched—so nothing too jarring for existing users
A few reviewers reckon the new look borrows a page from Sony’s book, and not everyone’s thrilled about that. Each to their own, I suppose.
Worth flagging: the first images doing the rounds are mock-ups, not official Canon photography—though the source insists this one’s about as close to the real thing as you’ll get without Canon confirming it themselves. Since then, what look like genuine leaked photos have also surfaced, apparently sourced from certification filings (think FCC-style paperwork).
There’s also talk of a bolt-on grip extension, which simply adds a bit of extra height at the bottom for anyone with larger hands—handy, and it won’t block access to the battery compartment.
The rumoured spec sheet
Take these with a pinch of salt, as sources don’t entirely agree:
- Sensor: Some say a 24MP full-frame chip; others reckon it’ll borrow the 32.5MP sensor from the EOS R6 Mark III
- In-body stabilisation (IBIS): Up to 7.5 stops—a genuine step up, since the current R8 has no IBIS at all
- Card slots: Two SD slots this time round, up from just the one
- Burst shooting: Up to 40fps electronic shutter, with no mechanical shutter on offer
- Video: 4K, but don’t expect 7K
- The curious one: A feature that reportedly converts 2D stills into 3D video—how exactly that’ll work is anyone’s guess
Who’s it for?
By the sounds of it, Canon’s pitching this one at travel and everyday shooting, aiming to win over a younger crowd and first-time full-frame buyers. The idea seems to be giving the R8 line its own visual identity, rather than just being another face in the EOS R crowd.
A word of caution: none of this is confirmed by Canon, so treat it as rumour until proven otherwise. Specs, styling and pricing could all shift before the big day. We’ll know for certain once the curtain lifts on 15 September.
