Qualcomm introduced the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 as a more accessible alternative to last year’s flagship lineup, keeping the same 3 nm process and Oryon CPU architecture. This means that even upper-mid-range phones will now receive performance that was previously exclusive to premium models.
According to gagadget, the new chip delivers a significant performance boost: around +36% in CPU tasks and +11% in GPU workloads. In everyday usage this translates into faster app launches, more stable performance under load, and reduced heating during gaming sessions.
Architecture and performance: flagship-class hardware without the flagship price
The Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 includes eight CPU cores: two high-performance cores running up to 3.8 GHz, and six efficiency-focused cores clocked up to 3.32 GHz. This combination lets phones maintain speed during multitasking, video editing, photo processing, and demanding apps.
The GPU has also been upgraded: hardware-level ray tracing, AI-enhanced graphics, and gaming features previously reserved for high-end devices. For the user, this means stable FPS in heavy scenes and smoother visual performance overall.
At the same time, Qualcomm clearly separates the lineup: the Gen 5 does not include the fastest UFS 4.1 storage support or several elite-class features from the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. This is not a drawback but a natural balance between price and capabilities.
Technical specifications: clock speeds, graphics, and benchmark results
The Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 is built on a 3 nm process and uses Qualcomm’s custom Oryon cores — the same architecture found in their flagship platform. This design ensures high performance even in the sub-flagship category.
The prime core reaches 3.8 GHz, while six performance/efficiency cores run up to 3.32 GHz.
The Adreno 840 GPU — the same used in the Snapdragon 8 Elite — appears here with a reduced clock of 1.2 GHz. This helps the chip stay cooler and more power-efficient while keeping strong gaming performance.
Early leaks and benchmark scores show impressive results:

- Geekbench 6: around 3000 (single-core) and 10,000 (multi-core)

In CPU performance, the chip comes close to last year’s Snapdragon 8 Elite. GPU performance is naturally slightly lower due to reduced frequency, but in real-world usage the difference is minimal — only peak gaming scenarios will favor the Elite.
First smartphones powered by Snapdragon 8 Gen 5
The first smartphones with this chip are already preparing for release. According to insiders, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 will debut in:
- OnePlus Ace 6T — expected before the end of the year
- Vivo S50 Pro Mini — also launching before year-end
- Honor GT 2 — scheduled for December or early January
This means the Gen 5 will appear earlier than expected and will power a new wave of sub-flagship devices offering near-flagship performance at a more accessible price.
Cameras, video, and on-device AI
The updated ISP supports camera sensors up to 320 MP and 4K 120 FPS video recording. AI-based HDR, noise reduction, and stabilization now run faster and more accurately. Much of this processing is handled by the AI core directly on the device, without sending data to the cloud.
This is crucial for privacy: fewer photos, videos, and audio samples leave the phone, reducing the chance of unauthorized access.
Connectivity and battery efficiency
