MacBook Air M4 (2025): Should You Wait or Buy Now?

MacBook Air has long been Apple’s most popular laptop—lightweight, powerful, and long-lasting. It’s the go-to choice for students and professionals alike. But will the 2025 version truly be worth the upgrade?

As a MacBook Air M1 user, I’m eagerly waiting for the new model because I feel the limitations of its RAM. In this article, I’ll break down what changes we can expect from the MacBook Air M4 and whether it’s worth holding off on a purchase until its release.

What’s New in MacBook Air M4 (2025)?

If Apple follows its usual upgrade cycle, the new MacBook Air will feature the M4 chip, improved specs, and possibly new features that make it even better for work, study, and creativity.

A More Powerful M4 Chip

Apple has already introduced the M4 chip in the latest iPad Pro, so it’s logical to expect it in the MacBook Air 2025. What does this mean?

  • Better performance for everyday tasks and demanding applications.
  • Improved energy efficiency, extending battery life.

For me, this means a faster laptop that can handle resource-heavy applications without lag.

16GB RAM as the New Standard

Previously, upgrading RAM meant paying a premium—so much that it made you question whether to get a MacBook Pro instead. That’s why I held off. But I’m really hoping for 16GB RAM in the base model.

Apple has been phasing out 8GB RAM from its lineup. In 2024, the MacBook Pro and iMac started shipping with 16GB RAM by default, so it’s likely the same will happen with the MacBook Air.

Upgraded 12MP Webcam

Apple is finally acknowledging that a 1080p webcam isn’t enough in 2025. The MacBook Pro 2024 introduced a 12MP camera with Center Stage, and chances are the MacBook Air 2025 will get the same upgrade.

Personally, I don’t rely on my laptop’s camera much—I use my phone when I need high-quality video. But if it’s an option, why not?

What does this bring?

✔️ The camera follows you during video calls, keeping you centered.

✔️ Better image quality in low light.

✔️ Desk View mode lets you show your workspace during meetings.

If you use Zoom, Google Meet, or FaceTime frequently, this will be a useful update. Hopefully, the improved lighting adjustments will prevent calls from looking like they were shot in the ’90s.

More Ports: Three Thunderbolt 4

MacBook Air has always suffered from a lack of ports. The M2/M3 models only have two Thunderbolt 3 ports, limiting connectivity options.

According to recent leaks, MacBook Air 2025 might get three Thunderbolt 4 ports—just like the MacBook Pro. This means:

✔️ Faster data transfer and better accessory support.

✔️ The ability to connect two external monitors without closing the laptop lid.

For video editors and graphic designers, this will be a big plus. Although, to be honest, I still carry a hub everywhere—working with an SD card on a MacBook Air remains a challenge.

Potential New Features

Anti-Glare Nano-Texture Display

The 2024 MacBook Pro introduced an optional nano-textured display that reduces glare and improves visibility in bright environments. Apple might bring this feature to the MacBook Air 2025 as well.

New Colors

MacBook Air M2/M3 introduced Midnight, but it turned out to be a fingerprint magnet. The 2025 model might get a different coating or entirely new colors, like the iMac.

That said, I’ll probably stick to classic Space Gray.

When Will the MacBook Air 2025 Be Released?

There’s no official release date yet, but Apple traditionally launches the MacBook Air in spring. Expectations point to a March or April 2025 launch, supported by:

✔️ Mark Gurman (Bloomberg) reported that the new Air will launch before the iPhone SE 4.

✔️ Apple will likely announce it via press release, without a major event.

Should You Wait for MacBook Air M4 or Buy Now?

If you’re considering getting a MacBook Air but aren’t sure whether to wait, here are the pros and cons:

Buy Now (MacBook Air M3)

✔️ Available immediately—no waiting required.

✔️ The M3 chip is still powerful for most tasks.

✔️ Might get discounted when the M4 launches.

Wait for M4

✔️ Stronger processor & 16GB RAM as standard.

✔️ Potential new features—better webcam, more ports, anti-glare display.

✔️ Longer software support for future macOS updates.

If you urgently need a laptop, get the MacBook Air M3. But if you can wait a few months, the M4 will likely be a much better investment.

Final Thoughts

The MacBook Air 2025 is shaping up to be one of the most exciting updates in Apple’s lineup. Expect a powerful M4 chip, 16GB RAM as the new base, an upgraded webcam, more ports, and possibly an anti-glare display.

Personally, I’m waiting for this model because my MacBook Air M1 is starting to show its age, and the 2025 version could be the perfect upgrade.

If you’re also considering a new MacBook, it’s worth holding out until March-April 2025. Apple is clearly working on something exciting.
