Samsung has decided to discontinue its Galaxy Edge smartphone lineup, which failed to meet expectations even in its home market. According to South Korean media, the final blow to the project came from the weak sales of the Galaxy S25 Edge — demand turned out to be far below forecasts, despite a large-scale advertising campaign.

A failed experiment: why the ultra-thin Galaxy S25 Edge couldn’t become Samsung’s new flagship

Sources report that the Galaxy S26 Edge was already in the final stage of development: production lines were being prepared, the design had been approved, and suppliers selected. However, the sudden decision to shut down the project caught even Samsung’s engineers off guard, causing internal confusion and delays across several departments.

Originally, the Edge series was envisioned as a new-format flagship — an ultra-thin, lightweight phone made from premium materials with a focus on aesthetics. The S25 Edge was meant to prove that “thin” could mean “high-tech,” but users were far less impressed.

The main complaints centered on battery life: with a capacity of only 3900 mAh, the phone barely lasted through a full day of use. Its high price — around $1110 — further discouraged buyers, who preferred the more practical S25+ and S25 Ultra models.

As a result, the project intended to rival the hypothetical iPhone Air became one of Samsung’s shortest-lived experiments in recent years. The company has not yet commented on the future of the technologies developed for Edge, but analysts believe that some innovations may find their way into upcoming foldable phones or lighter flagship versions.

Galaxy Edge was meant to symbolize elegance — but instead became a reminder that compromises between design and functionality rarely lead to success.
