iPhone avoids Trump tariffs — what it means for Apple and consumers

A temporary relief for Apple or part of a long-term strategy?

Apple and its customers can breathe a sigh of relief — at least for now. The Biden administration (continuing trade pressure from the Trump era) has granted temporary exemptions from import tariffs that would have impacted smartphones, laptops, and other electronics imported from China.

Earlier this month, Apple faced the threat of a 145% import duty on China-made products. That raised fears of sharp price increases for iPhones and other Apple devices sold in the US. But now, those fears have been put on hold.

According to Bloomberg, the US Customs and Border Protection agency released an updated policy late Friday evening, narrowing the scope of Trump-era tariffs. Smartphones, laptops, hard drives, memory chips, computer processors — and even semiconductor manufacturing equipment — are now exempt from the 125% tariff.

Most of these consumer electronics are not currently manufactured in the US. Shifting production locally would take years. That’s why these exemptions are crucial — not just for Apple, but for the entire tech industry.

Among the companies that benefit from this policy is Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), which has made significant investments in building new chip facilities in the United States. Without this exemption, even TSMC’s production plans could have been disrupted.

The decision follows several days of economic turbulence, during which the US administration announced sweeping tariff hikes, temporarily suspended duties for many countries (excluding China), and hinted at a possible shift of iPhone production to the US.

Still, industry experts warn that the tech sector is not out of danger yet. The White House may still impose sector-specific tariffs in the coming months, regardless of the current rollback to the 10% base rate.

For now, though, it’s a win for Apple — and for millions of consumers who rushed to buy Apple products before potential price hikes kicked in.
