Xiaomi released a 12 kg Mijia washing machine: what caught our attention
at homeXiaomi continues to expand the Mijia lineup, and its new 12 kg washer-dryer is no longer just a household appliance, but a real “truck” for your bathroom. If you’re tired of taking blankets to the dry cleaner or running laundry three times a day, this device will definitely make you think about upgrading.
Why 12 kg is not just a number?
Most standard machines stop at 7–8 kg. Try stuffing heavy curtains or a winter пуховик in there — and the drum will start throwing a tantrum. The new Xiaomi Mijia Washing Machine features a 530 mm drum. What does that mean in practice? Clothes inside don’t just clump into a wet mass, but “float” freely, which is critical for washing quality and proper drying.

Washing at night? Easy. It won’t wake even your cat
The main problem with large washing machines is the “jet takeoff” sound when 12 kg of wet laundry starts spinning. Xiaomi solved this by installing a Direct Drive motor.
There is no belt that stretches over time and starts to squeak. The drum is mounted directly on the motor shaft, so instead of the usual rumble you hear only light water movement. The claimed 48 dB is quieter than your fridge or background kitchen noise.
- You can safely set a timer for 3 a.m. to save on night electricity rates;
- Neighbors downstairs won’t come asking what’s banging in your apartment;
- Even if the washer is placed in a hallway near the bedroom, it won’t disturb your sleep.
Hygiene on steroids: steam and microbes

Xiaomi wouldn’t be Xiaomi without adding a sterilization system into the drum. They claim 99.999% removal of bacteria and dust mites. It sounds like marketing, but in practice it works through steam treatment.
For allergy sufferers, this is a must-have. Steam “pushes out” unwanted particles from fabric fibers that usually cause irritation.
Steam also helps reduce wrinkles. If you’re not a perfectionist, T-shirts after such a wash might not need ironing at all.
Odor removal: a separate feature for those who have been around smoke or barbecue — steam removes smells without a full wash cycle.
To prevent the machine itself from becoming a mold hotspot (a common issue in front-load washers), it includes door seal self-cleaning with spray and antibacterial coating everywhere possible.
Drying: can it replace ironing?
The machine can both wash and dry. It uses an intelligent sensor that stops the process once the laundry is dry. You get soft towels without having to hang them all over the apartment. But realistically, if you overload the drum, ironing will still be needed.
Pitfalls and smart home
Of course, it’s Xiaomi, so Mi Home is included. Controlling the machine from a smartphone is convenient, but keep in mind: since this is a China-market product, you will likely need to set the region to China in the app.
Voice control via XiaoAI only supports Chinese. However, Mi Home integration works better than most other Chinese smart home apps.
The design is minimalistic, with a touchscreen that looks good even in an open kitchen-studio space.
Is it worth waiting?
In China, the starting price is about $275. When it reaches global markets, the price will likely increase to around $400–450.
If you have a large family or deal with big laundry loads, this is a logical choice. If you live alone and only wash a few clothes, this “giant” will simply run half-empty most of the time.
