Apple Enters a Complex Segment: Who Stands to Lose First

Apple is actively working on its own foldable smartphone, and according to the latest reports, it is not a book-style device but a Flip format — a compact smartphone that folds vertically. The company is already testing several prototypes and evaluating whether the design meets its standards for quality and durability.

Amid the 2026 smartphone market reshuffle, the arrival of a foldable iPhone could significantly impact the balance of power.

According to supply chain sources, Apple is exploring a smartphone with a flexible OLED display that remains compact when folded and unfolds into a full-size screen similar to a traditional iPhone. The key challenge remains the hinge mechanism and minimizing the display crease — these are the elements Apple is testing most rigorously.

Earlier, we wrote about a new display technology linked to Apple Fold.

Why the Flip Format

The clamshell-style format offers several strategic advantages for Apple:

  • compact size when folded;
  • the ability to maintain a familiar display format when opened;
  • reduced risk of cannibalizing the iPad mini;
  • potentially lower production costs compared to large fold models.

Apple traditionally enters a new segment only when the technology reaches a sufficient level of maturity. That is why the company has not rushed to release a foldable iPhone before, even though Samsung, Motorola, and other manufacturers have been developing this category for several years.

Although foldable smartphones remain niche, some models have shown explosive demand — Galaxy TriFold is a recent example, selling out within minutes.

When to Expect a Release

At this stage, the device remains in internal testing, and no final decision on mass production has been made. Analysts suggest that if testing proves successful, the first foldable iPhone could arrive no earlier than 2026–2027.

For Apple, it is not just about launching another form factor, but delivering a product without compromises in thickness, battery life, and hinge reliability. If the company succeeds in reducing the screen crease and ensuring durability, it could significantly reshape the foldable smartphone segment.

Can Apple Make Foldable Smartphones Mainstream

The arrival of a Flip-style foldable iPhone could act as a catalyst for renewed interest in the segment. So far, foldable devices remain niche due to high prices and durability concerns, but Apple’s involvement typically increases mainstream consumer trust.

If Apple confirms development and brings the device to market, competition in the foldable segment will intensify rapidly. At that point, the Flip format could move from experimental to mainstream.
