I’m generally in favor of buying a new smartphone. Better battery life, new features, a longer update cycle, and the ability to upgrade without spending all the money in the world. But this time, we’re comparing the base iPhone 17 with a model released two years earlier that still offers full Pro features.
We’ll look at whether it’s worth buying, what has actually improved, and how prices compare.
Why compare these two models? The iPhone 15 Pro has dropped in price, while the iPhone 17 launched without some Pro features. As a result, many buyers face a real dilemma: buy a brand-new iPhone straight out of the box or choose a former flagship with stronger hardware. The iPhone 17 runs on a newer processor and therefore has a longer iOS support horizon. This matters if you plan to keep your phone for 4–5 years. It will receive more updates and retain resale value better.
That said, in day-to-day use, the iPhone 15 Pro doesn’t feel outdated at all. Apps, camera, video, games, and file handling all run smoothly. For most users, performance differences are barely noticeable.
