Apple moves closer to launching its first foldable iPhone — and the visible crease may finally be gone

Apple is steadily progressing in the development of its first foldable iPhone, and a new wave of leaks suggests that the company has solved the biggest flaw of all foldable devices. According to Taiwan’s United Daily News, which cites sources within the supply chain, Apple has tested a new hinge and display structure that allows the device to eliminate the visible crease entirely. This means the foldable iPhone’s screen could look seamless — without the characteristic dip in the middle that has remained a major weakness of models from Samsung, Huawei and other competitors.

What the new iPhone Fold design looks like

Industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, one of the most reliable insiders when it comes to Apple, reports that the company is using a hinge made from a liquid metal alloy. This mechanism distributes pressure more evenly during folding and significantly reduces surface deformation. According to Kuo, Apple is aiming for a display that looks as solid as traditional OLED panels, without any visual break where the screen bends.

Sources also confirm that the hinge has been co-developed with Shin Zu Shing and Amphenol, while the display panel is expected to be supplied by Samsung Display. Samsung currently leads the market in flexible OLED technology, but Apple has reportedly reworked the folding mechanism, substrate layers and internal reinforcement to create a true “crease-free” structure.

When to expect the presentation — and what else is coming

Based on Apple’s typical schedule, the device could be unveiled during the September keynote, alongside the next generation of standard iPhones.

Early prototypes are already undergoing durability tests, including extended folding cycles, brightness uniformity evaluations and long-term stress testing of the display layers. One intriguing leak mentions a 24-megapixel under-display camera, which would mark Apple’s first use of a fully hidden front camera designed specifically for foldable form factors.

Some insiders also claim the foldable model may include the largest battery ever used in an iPhone, taking advantage of additional internal space created by the new architecture.

Why this could change the entire foldable market

Foldable smartphones have been on the market for several years, yet none of them have fully solved the crease problem. Even the latest models still show a visible indentation along the folding line, which disrupts visual comfort and affects image integrity. If Apple truly manages to deliver a crease-free foldable display, it could set a new benchmark for the entire industry and reshape user expectations.

This also explains why Apple waited so long to enter the foldable category: the company was unlikely to release a product that did not match its internal standards for durability and appearance.

Despite all the leaks, Apple has not made any official announcements yet. Specifications, pricing, naming and timing may still change. But one thing is clear: Apple is preparing a foldable device designed not just to join the category, but to redefine it.
