Apple has introduced a new generation of AirTag with an expanded tracking range and improved item-finding capabilities. This is the first major update to the tracker since its original release in 2021.

The updated AirTag features a second-generation Ultra Wideband chip, the same technology used in recent iPhone and Apple Watch models. As a result, Precision Finding now works over longer distances, making it easier to locate misplaced items farther away. Apple has also updated the Bluetooth component to improve overall detection reliability.

One of the key changes is support for Precision Finding directly from Apple Watch. This feature allows users to locate AirTag without using an iPhone, but it is limited to Apple Watch Series 9, Apple Watch Ultra 2, and newer models. Apple Watch SE (2nd generation) does not support this functionality due to the lack of an Ultra Wideband chip.

The new AirTag also includes a louder built-in speaker, making audio alerts easier to hear during searches. The core concept remains unchanged: AirTag is designed to help users find personal items via the Find My app, using encrypted location data accessible only to the owner.

Apple reiterates that AirTag is intended for tracking objects, not people or pets, and includes safeguards to prevent unwanted tracking. The company is also expanding its Share Item Location feature, which allows users to temporarily share an AirTag’s location, including with participating airlines to help recover delayed or lost luggage.

The updated AirTag is available immediately at the same price as before — $29 for a single unit and $99 for a four-pack.
