When a new smartphone generation launches, we expect change. A faster chip, better cameras, a brighter display — at least something has to move forward. That was the expectation when we first saw Google Pixel 10a. Yesterday it looked like a logical step in the lineup. Google Pixel 10a — what is this phone actually about?
Yesterday we published the news about Google Pixel 10a and genuinely welcomed the release. New generation, fresh renders, updated lineup — it all looked like progress.
A day later we compared Pixel 10a vs Pixel 9a carefully.
Here is what actually stands out.
- Processor — same level of performance.
- RAM and storage — unchanged.
- Cameras — same sensors and comparable image processing.
- Design — minor cosmetic tweaks that do not change the overall feel of the device.
Remove the “10” from the name and you are looking at a slightly adjusted Pixel 9a. No hardware leap. No new use cases. No real reason for a Pixel 9a owner to upgrade.
This does not mean the phone is weak. The issue is different — it is too close to the previous model.
The real question is no longer whether Pixel 10a is good. The question is why it exists if last year’s Pixel 9a does the same job.

Performance: Nothing Changed
Both phones run on Google Tensor G4. That means identical real-world performance in gaming, daily tasks, multitasking and camera processing. Same 8 GB of RAM. Same UFS 3.1 storage. No hardware difference.
If you upgrade from Pixel 9a to Pixel 10a, you will not get a speed boost.
Cameras: Same Hardware
The 48 MP main sensor and 13 MP ultrawide are the same in both models. The front camera is also unchanged. Video recording goes up to 4K at 60 fps.
Any difference would come from software tuning, not from new camera hardware.
Battery: The Only Visible Update
The battery capacity stays at 5100 mAh. Pixel 10a does offer faster wired charging and slightly improved wireless charging. That is a real upgrade — but it does not change battery life, only charging time.
Display and Protection
The display size and resolution are identical. Pixel 10a is slightly brighter and uses newer Gorilla Glass 7i instead of Gorilla Glass 3. In everyday use, the difference will be marginal unless you are outdoors in direct sunlight or drop the phone.
Final Verdict
Google Pixel 10a is not an evolution. It is practically a direct copy of Pixel 9a with minor changes that do not affect performance, camera quality or battery life. Same Tensor G4. Same memory. Same camera setup.
Take away the “10” and you are left with the same Pixel 9a. Calling this a new generation is a stretch.
