Right after Android Show, Google quietly rolled out the first beta release of Android 16 (QPR1 Beta 1). And guess what? This update isn’t just about bug fixes or under-the-hood improvements — it introduces a bold new look called Material 3 Expressive.
If you’ve got a Pixel 6 or newer, you can already download it. And trust us, the first thing you’ll notice is that everything looks different — from the lock screen to quick settings. It’s not just new colors or fonts: Android now has fresh motion effects, smoother transitions, and more dynamic UI elements. Google’s clearly going for a more modern, fluid experience.
More customization, more effects, more fun
According to early testers (and deep dives from 9to5Google), there’s a lot packed into this beta. You can now customize your home screen grid, shrink the At a Glance widget, and add more tiles to quick settings. Even wallpapers get a glow-up — with new animated effects, including weather overlays.
In short: Android 16 feels new. And that’s refreshing, especially after years of relatively minor visual updates. If you’ve been waiting for Android to look like it’s evolving — this might be the moment.
But heads up: this is still beta
If you’re enrolled in the Android Beta Program and using a compatible Pixel phone, the update should reach you automatically. If not, you can manually sign up at the Android Beta site.
That said — keep your expectations in check. Beta means bugs. Beta means instability. If you need a rock-solid daily phone, it’s better to wait for the stable build. The final release of Android 16 is expected by the end of June, while the new Material 3 Expressive design will officially roll out in the first QPR update later this year.
